My New Life Gets Off to a Running Start

I blame the sneakers. I ought to have known it was a mistake to buy white ones. (What an awful word ‘sneakers’ is! In my youth we had plimsolls, spikes for athletics, and soccer or rugby boots, but never ‘sneakers’. Not even my friends shod in thick crepe-soled shoes called ‘brothel-creepers’ would have worn something as underhand as a pair of ‘sneakers’.)

Totting up columns of four-and-tuppences and such like was never much of a challenge when I had to collect on my paper round of a Friday night, and my GCE 'O' Level mark in mathematics ('hard sums', as a friend used to call it) was one of my best results. So it strikes me as passing strange that even though I can still add up my expenses without benefit of a calculator, I can't remember my own phone number without some sort of memory aid. I can remember…

    Faint Hope?

Image via Wikipedia Easter — Sunday, 4 April 2010. I went to church this morning and found myself wondering whether I believed what I was singing and saying. What does Easter really mean to me, and does it matter? As I have got older so I have thought rather less about life after death and more about getting as long a life before death as I can. It’s not that bodily resurrection doesn’t have some appeal – after all, who wants to be non-existant, or even non-corporeal, once they have enjoyed everything that’s good about being sentient? But I can’t help thinking, if we are all going to be raised…
